By implementing legally compliant automation in invoice processing, we are driving the reduction of bureaucracy within the federal administration. End-to-end processes are being automated to a large extent in a digital, efficient and sustainable way, reducing administrative effort, easing the workload of employees, and enabling invoices to be processed faster and more reliably. The focus is on developing a scalable solution that is viable both functionally and technically and can, in the long term, be rolled out across the entire federal administration.

From when and for whom does the new invoice process apply?
The pilot phase already started in March of this year with selected pilot authorities. The rollout of the first results is planned for March 2027. All affected authorities of the direct federal administration will receive timely information as well as opportunities for exchange and support formats.
What are the benefits of automated invoice processing?
By automating invoice processing, end-to-end processes are being automated to a large extent in a digital, efficient and sustainable way. This reduces administrative effort, eases the workload of employees, and makes invoice processing faster and more reliable.
The implementation is intended to deliver the following benefits for invoice issuers and invoice recipients:
Benefits for invoice issuers
- Shorter throughput times due to automated processing by the invoice recipient
- Faster invoice processing and faster receipt of payments
- Greater planning certainty in cash flow management
Benefits for invoice recipients
- Reduction of manual processing steps
- Higher process quality and lower susceptibility to errors through automatic invoice validation
- Faster approval processes and shorter throughput times
- More efficient use of resources through streamlined processes
- Greater potential to make use of cash discount periods through accelerated invoice processing
Why is the invoice process being automated?
As part of the Modernisation Agenda for the State and the Federal Administration adopted by the Federal Government, the action area Efficient Federal Administration aims to reduce bureaucracy in order to increase efficiency in the administration. Measure 6.5, Simplifying invoice processing, is intended to automate invoice processing in the systems of the federal administration to a large extent. To implement this measure, the project for the automation of the receipt and processing of e-invoices was launched under the project name D-Easi – Germany’s incoming e-invoice processing: automated, secure, integrated. The project is part of the D-Stack initiative and is being driven forward under the lead responsibility of the Federal Procurement Office of the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BeschA).
